Empowering Women in Sustainable Agriculture and Early Childhood Development

The Green Growth Girls Project is a multi-stakeholder initiative designed to empower women in rural areas of South Africa, Mozambique and Malawi. The ClemenGold Foundation provides women with the tools and support to become economically independent, both through improved sustainable agricultural practices, and enhanced soft and essential skills.  Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre practitioners also receive training as part of the programme, creating broader opportunities for female participation in the workforce.

  • Job creation and improved employment conditions in sustainable agriculture

The programme equips women with knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices through gender-responsive and gender-transformative training initiatives, and so ensures environmentally conscious farming that preserves the earth for future generations.

  • Enhanced ECD training

Training of ECD practitioners establishes a higher quality education to children, enabling women to enter the workforce in full-time employment, knowing their children are in safe, educational care.

Project Areas

  • South Africa: the project focuses on agricultural areas around Letsitele and Hoedspruit in the Limpopo Province, and Burgersfort and Nelspruit in Mpumalanga.
  • Malawi: the project partners with the Shire Valley Transformation Programme, situated in the Chikwawa District, south-west of Blantyre, a critical agricultural region known for its farming potential.
  • Mozambique: the project works with farming communities in the Namaacha district.

Funded by the WE4D programme in the GIZ

WE4D (Employment promotion for women for the green transformation in Africa) is a regional platform for employment promotion, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-funded by European Union (regional Team Europe Initiatives – TEI IYBA SEED, TEI IYBA WE4A) and Norad, and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH​.

WE4D aims to support employment opportunities, especially for women in Africa, and contributes to a green transformation of nine partner countries (South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Cameroon, Togo, and Senegal).
